Dealing with DLL Issues

Many users find it a cumbersome task to deal with DLL issues. This could be due to the fact that there are so many different types of DLL files and that they have strange names that may make them look quite complex. So the question arises, is it really that difficult for you to troubleshoot DLL issues alone without the help of an expert?

First, it is important to understand the significance of the DLL files on your computer. Every computer hosts a variety of computer applications. While all of them may have a different purpose to serve, many of them perform some common actions and tasks. So, instead of having separate files for these common tasks, DLL or Dynamic Link Library files are used. These files are used to save code libraries that can be called on and loaded by different programs as and when they need them. So, DLL files help in the optimal use of computer space and make your applications and PC run faster.

There are thousands of DLL files on your computer. This is the reason why there can be many causes of problems with them. Some of the most common causes on how to fix DLL errors are listed below:

  1. Missing Files: A DLL file may be deleted by mistake and lead to errors.
  2. Corrupt Files: A malware infection or hard drive problems may corrupt a DLL file.
  3. Incompatible File: A good file is overwritten with an incompatible file of the same name.
  4. Invalid or Broken File: The DLL file in the application you are trying to install is invalid or broken.
  5. Corrupt or missing software: DLL errors, such as “xvidcore.dll not found” when the software required to perform a particular task is either buggy or missing from the system.

There are several ways by which you can deal with DLL issues. Given below are some of the primary methods that explain how to fix DLL errors:

  1. You should start by concentrating on the error message and try and understand the problem. For example, if you receive an error message that says: msvcr80dll missing, you should note the file name and try and conduct an internet search for the files. When you find that particular file you can perform msvcr80.dll download and save the file in the correct folder. This should take care of the missing file problem. At times, the problems can be resolved by reinstalling the software that generated the error.

  2. Another popular method to correct the DLL file problem is to opt for a System Restore. This is a facility provided by your operating system that lets you restore your system settings to the way they were at a previous point of time. By restoring the system prior to the time when the error happened, you can recreate the system before the problem occurred. In case the DLL error is not allowing you to start your computer, you can try opening it in Safe Mode and then perform a System Restore.

  3. If you have come across the DLL error during an installation process, you can see if the error is removed by uninstalling that program. If it does, then it is a good idea to get in touch with the manufacturer and seek support on the issue.

  4. Finally, you may use a good registry tool to perform a thorough scan of the registry to detect and fix any erroneous entry that might be generating DLL errors on your PC.
